NYSPHSAA and CSEA Announce Excelsior Award Winner
Mike Gunn from Levittown Public Schools is the 2018 Recipient

LATHAM, NY- The New York State High School Athletic Association and CSEA have announced Mike Gunn of Levittown Public Schools (Section VIII) as the winner of the 9th annual Excelsior Award. Mike has been an employee of Levittown for 40 years, he began working in the district as a cleaner while he was still in high school. After graduation, he got a job in the school district as a part-time cleaner. He worked at a few local schools until finally settling at General Douglas MacArthur high school 26 years ago.

"Mike Gunn goes above and beyond every day to improve the quality of life at General Douglas MacArthur High School,” said CSEA President Danny Donohue. “I’m glad our partnership with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association gives us the opportunity to recognize Mike’s tireless efforts to support the students, staff and community.”

The award was developed through a partnership between NYSPHSAA and CSEA to recognize a CSEA member in a NYSPHSAA school who has helped promote and foster athletic spirit in their local school district as well as display extraordinary dedication and support of high school athletics in New York State. The organizations have been partnered since 2002.

“On behalf of the nearly 800 NYSPHSAA member schools, I would like to congratulate Mr. Gunn on receiving this award. He truly embodies what the Excelsior Award represents, and his commitment to the students of New York is remarkable,”  said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “Mike is an incredible example of overcoming adversity, hard work and dedication to your community. He is the perfect recipient of the 2018 CSEA Excelsior award.

Gunn was born with cerebral palsy and has been confined to a wheelchair most of his adult life. He uses a scooter to get around but does not let his physical limitations slow him down. He is beloved by the staff, administrators and over 7,000 students in the district. Mike’s work ethic is unmatched, he is often the “first one in and last one to leave” while working Saturday and Sunday as well. Gunn’s current job responsibilities include making sure the school is safe for staff and students, supervising the custodial crew and lending a helping hand wherever needed.

Gunn was honored at the NYSPHSAA Football Championships at the Carrier Dome on November 24. Congratulations to Mike Gunn on being selected as the 2018 Excelsior Award winner.
