By Ashley Vanderwall, Intern- The NYSPHSAA Girls Tennis State Championship will return to Tri-City Fitness, a privately-owned and operated 12-court indoor facility in Latham (Section 2).

The State Tournament begins Saturday, October 27 with matches starting at 9:00 am. On Sunday, October 28 the Quarterfinals and Semifinals will be played with the first match starting at 9:00 am. At 9:00 am on Monday, October 29 the singles and doubles finals will be played in addition to the 3rd and 4th place matches. A seating gallery on risers will be installed once again on the finals court for more fan viewing. Admission is free all 3 days of the Championship.

Hosting this event is nothing new for Tri-City as they have hosted the State Tournament five times in the last six years and are currently hosting it for a three-year term through 2019. In preparation for the event, which takes place October 27-29, all 12 courts have been resurfaced in the last two years and the club plans to bring in a food vendor for athletes and fans. The club, which is less than six miles from the NYSPHSAA headquarters, has also made arrangements for additional parking to accommodate buses and fan cars.

“Tri City Fitness takes great pride in being the host of the NYSPHSAA Girls Tennis Championships,” said Joe Clemente, President of Tri-City. “Our facility and personnel is second to none when it comes to hosting events like this. We’ve hosted several USTA Jr. National events throughout the year so our experience will make this tournament run in the most professional manner.”

Three years ago Tri-City staff instructor, Andy Schecter, was named USTA Tournament Director of the Year. Schecter is also the liaison to the NYSPHSAA Staff helping plan and run the event at the club.

“The NYSPHSAA Girls State Tennis Championships are the pinnacle of the season for our memberships’ athletes from across the state with each participating section sending its top three singles and doubles reps to compete” said Girls Tennis Coordinator, Chris Horgan. “The Tri-City Tennis Club is a wonderful venue for our tournament as it is a topnotch facility with twelve courts with great lighting and ample viewing for spectators to enjoy the 74 matches that will be played over three days.  Historically, the NYSPHSAA tournament features exceptionally talented players, including many who have gone on to top college programs and some who have played on the WTA tour, so fans will have a great opportunity to see high level tennis each day of the event.  Competitors will hopefully have an experience that they can treasure for a lifetime”

Last year, Julia Andreach of Our Lady of Mercy (Section V) won the singles championship while Vanessa Ciano and Laina Campos of Urusline (Section I) teamed for the doubles title.
