Diane Chapman is one of only a few coaches in New York State to be amongst the top five winningest coaches in two varsity sports. At Garden City High School (Section VIII), she’s amassed a sparkling 473-41-23 (.881 %, 5th in NYS) career record in field hockey since 1991 and a 314-43-1 (.869 %, 5th in NYS) career record in girls lacrosse since 2002. In 29 seasons coaching field hockey her team’s have won an astounding 7 NYSPHSAA State Championships, 22 Long Island Championships, and 25 Section VIII Championships with 18 of those coming in consecutive years from 1994-2011. In 1998, her team went undefeated and unscored upon. Chapman broke NYSPHSAA and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) records with 58 consecutive wins from 2005-07 and 61 wins from 1998-2000. Spanning 18 years in coaching girls lacrosse, her teams have captured 10 NYSPHSAA State Championships (7 consecutive from 2006-12), 11 Long Island Championships, and 11 Section VIII Championships. Diane has earned numerous Coach of the Year honors including NFHCA National Coach of the Year in 2005, 2 time Regional Coach of the Year, 2006 NHSCA Field Hockey Coach of the Year, 2017 NFHS Northeast Regional Girls Lacrosse Coach of the Year, Newsday Coach of the Decade (2019), and Newsday Coach of the Year (7 times). She’s a member of the Nassau County High School Athletic Hall of Fame, Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Nassau County Field Hockey Hall of Fame. Affectionately referred to as “Chappy,” she is a graduate of Spring-Ford High School (PA) where she played field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. After graduation she attended West Chester University (PA) competing in both field hockey and lacrosse while earning a Bachelors in Physical Education before going on to Adelphi University to earn a Masters in Sports Management. Before coaching at Garden City, Chappy was hired as a teacher at Sacred Heart in Greenwich, CT then subsequently moved to the Massapequa School District (Section VIII) for three years before settling in the Levittown School District (Section VIII) for the last 30 years.
