Hall of Fame
Marie Terc is one of the most experienced officials in the state. She has officiated five high school sports for a combined 143 seasons spanning over five decades. Not including the youth and collegiate levels she’s officiated, Marie’s resume includes 53 years umpiring softball, 44 years refereeing girls volleyball, 25 years boys volleyball, and 16 years as a basketball official. She’s also combined to officiate five seasons of field hockey and track and field. During her longstanding career, which shows no signs of retirement, Marie has been rated the #1 official in three sports for several years and officiated numerous NYSPHSAA Regional and State Championships. She’s also served as official softball rules interpreter and chief clinician for 39 years, was a past basketball rules interpreter for 12 years, was Commissioner of the Nassau County Volleyball Association, and was often a representative on the Officials Coordinating Council. Terc’s accolades include receiving the NYC Helen Allen Officiating Award (softball), Stony Brook Crown Nassau/Suffolk Trophy Award, Nassau County High School’s Gold Key Award, and was featured in a 2003 article in “Referee” magazine. In 2018, she was inducted into the Nassau County High School Sports Hall of Fame. Her officiating career took off in the 1967-68 school year followed by a 29-year career in education. In Marie’s years as a physical education teacher in Bethpage School District, her love for sports and her students went beyond just being “in the game”. One example includes producing a fitness video featuring her physical education students then entering it in a New York Mets-sponsored contest which she won. The video along with Marie and her class were all showcased on television during a Mets game. Furthermore, Terc earned PTA Teacher of the Year award and was heavily involved in the evolution of Title IX in the 1980’s. She diligently worked toward paving the way for Section VIII for parity of girls sports with boys sports. A multi-sport athlete while at Calhoun High School (Section VIII), Marie continued on to earn a Bachelors in Health and Physical Education at SUNY Brockport and a Masters in Physical Education at Adelphi University.
