The 1950’s produced a highly dedicated football official when Paul Weatherup became a member of the Syracuse Chapter of Football Officials in 1958. Weatherup’s career spanned five decades until his retirement in 1993.

Mr. Weatherup is currently the chairman of the NYSPHSAA Officials Coordinating Federation (OCF) where he’s served in this capacity since 1973 working to reunite all the state’s sports officials into a well organized cooperative organization. He is only the second individual to chair the OCF and with his tenure he has served the NYSPHSAA longer than any other individual in any position to date. In addition to presiding at OCF meetings twice annually, Weatherup has also chaired numerous arbitration hearings lending his wisdom in producing amicable resolutions to both contract and grievance impasses.

Weatherup began his officiating career in Section III as a certified football official. Just nine years into his 35-year tenure, he became the Secretary-Treasurer for the Syracuse Chapter of officials and in 1968 he was named the Executive Secretary of the New York State Association of Certified Officials—a position he still holds today. That same year, Weatherup added another Secretary-Treasurer title to his list of appointments when he served in the same position for the Blind Men’s Criers Marching and Chowder Society.

An original member (1980-84) of the Board of Director for the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO), Weatherup has not only been a timer for all football contests conducted at the Syracuse Carrier Dome since the 1980’s, but he has also timed all Section III soccer and field hockey games held there starting in the 80’s as well.

Beyond high school officiating, Weatherup had a 10-year stint as a college football official during the ‘60’s and 70’s, and has also served as the clock operator for all Syracuse University football games since 1985.

A Syracuse native, Mr. Weatherup is a Central Square High School graduate and attended Babson Institute in Babson Park, Massachusetts.
