Lawrence J. Mulvaney was an accomplished football and wrestling coach from 1950-1978 in the Schenectady School District in Section 2.
Despite being born and raised in Springfield, Mass, Mr. Mulvaney landed his first head football coaching position in 1952 at Mont Pleasant High School in the Schenectady School District. He also served as an assistant track coach and physical education teacher at the school until 1967—the year his football team went undefeated and was ranked #1 in the State. However, after 15 years at Mont Pleasant Mulvaney accepted the head football and wrestling coach positions at Westfield High School in Massachusetts for the 1968-69 school year. His success at Mont Pleasant was hard to stay away from as he returned to the school the following year to serve in the same capacities until 1978. In 1979 he was appointed a physical education teacher at Mont Pleasant and retired from there in 1989.
Along with three undefeated seasons and a #1 ranking in the State, Larry tallied a 107-64-4 career record as a football coach. He led his teams to several championships and ultimately produced six high school All-American players. Coach Mulvaney was also responsible for bringing football to Friday nights in Schenectady decades ago when Johnstown was the only Section 2 team playing under the lights. In 2001, Schenectady High School named the football field after Mulvaney.
As a wrestling coach, Mulvaney coached Mont Pleasant teams to a combined 209-58-6 record during his coaching career. His success brought three Section 2 championships to Mont Pleasant and saw more than 40 of his athletes capture individual section titles with two athletes winning NYSPHSAA State championships.
In 1995, Larry was inducted into the first class of the Schenectady High School Athletic Hall of Fame after receiving the Capital District Football Award from the District Committee just a few years earlier for his service to football in the Capital District.
Larry graduated from Springfield College (Massachusetts) in 1949 with a bachelors degree.
