Dr. William F. Moran affected generations of athletes, coaches and students during his well accomplished tenure as Superintendent of Valley Central School District (1963-81) and as Section IX’s first Executive Director (1983-1999).
Bill began his career as an English teacher and basketball coach in the Tappan Zee School District. Although he had a short coaching career due to a promotion to the Assistant Principal position at Tappan Zee, Dr. Moran experienced success taking the “Taps” to a PSAL title in 1957-58 and earned Coach of the Year honors two years in a row.
He was appointed the Valley Central Principal in 1963 before taking over as Superintendent a year later at the school. Under his leadership, Bill helped the district grow in terms of buildings and curriculum to the point where it was once the fifth largest school district in the country. He also helped the district nearly triple the rate of students acquiring a Regents diploma while also increasing the school’s athletic programs.
Known as the most influential individual in the history of Section IX athletics, Dr. Moran also served as the Executive Director of both the Mid Hudson School Study Council and NYS School Boards Association. He spent 17 years on the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee all while helping the leagues in his section work harmoniously together and re-write the section constitution to ensure fair representation in athletics.
As a nationally renowned educational leader and highly sought after public speaker, Bill was the recipient of the NYSAAA award in 1998 and won the first ever Dr. William Moran Award, an award in his name that now annually goes to an athletic administrator in Section IX who demonstrates leadership and integrity.
Dr. Moran earned his bachelors from Manhattan College, his masters from City University of New York, and his doctorate from Fordham University.
