Bernie O’Brien was the Executive Director of Interscholastic Athletics for Section VIII from 1980-1993. He established successful procedures for the section’s Athletic Administrators that are still used to this day. As Executive Director, O’Brien restructured Nassau County’s interscholastic organization to reflect the changing times in athletics. He was one of the first male supporters to take steps towards integrating female athletics into Section VIII continuously keeping it in the forefront during his 13-year tenure. Dubbed as one of the “Founding Fathers” of the NYSAAA, O’Brien served as the organization’s treasurer for many years. Since his retirement in 1993, O’Brien is still considered a valuable asset and resource to administrators and coaches in Nassau County.
