Dr. James Tolle was a well respected administrator in Nassau County of Section VIII. Before becoming NYSPHSAA President from 1994-96 and President of the New York State Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations from 1997-1999, Jim had a successful career at Uniondale UFSD and Malverne UFSD, both in Nassau County. Jim began his career as a high school science teacher and a swimming and rifle coach at Uniondale in 1959. He quickly ascended to Assistant Principal, Principal and ultimately Assistant Superintendent at Uniondale all by 1974 before moving on to Malverne where he became the Superintendent of Schools in 1979 until his retirement in 1992. Furthermore, he served from 1987-88 as President of the Nassau County Council of Superintendents.

A graduate of St. John’s University where he received his bachelor’s and doctorate, Jim also earned a master’s at Hofstra. His career was recognized with a number of honors including Educator of the Year from Phi Delta Kappa (St. John’s Chapter) in 1984, Distinguished Service Award from NYS Athletic Administrators Association in 1989, and Leaders in Education Award from St. John’s in 2006. Dr. Tolle was an active consultant to Section VIII athletics and served as a member of the NYSPHSAA Championship Advisory Committee (CAC).
