Anthony “Tony” Luciano was one of the top multi-sport coaches in the history of Section 2. In 1948, Luciano landed his first and only teaching job in the Hudson Falls Central School where he later became the Athletic Director. He would spend 35 years as a teacher, administrator and successful coach at Hudson Falls leading the football, basketball, track and cross country programs. His basketball teams amassed 335 wins and just 135 losses while winning seven Northern Conference titles and reaching the Section II Class B finals seven times during 25 seasons. In track, he compiled 221 dual meet wins and 15 Northern Conference Dual Meet Championships in 34 years.
A graduate of Hudson Falls High School in 1940, Tony was an athlete at Seton Hall University where he was a member of the track team that set national records in the two mile relay before he departed for a 39-month stint with the Marine Corps. Upon his return, he transferred to Colgate University and earned a Bachelors while running track and coaching cross country, then went on to receive a Masters at Springfield College in physical education.
Tony was a significant contributor to Section 2 as well. He served as Secretary of Section 2 from 1957-1980 and has been on the Section 2 basketball committee since 1955. In track, he chaired the Section 2 Class B, C, D, and E committee from 1955-1971. He is a member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Hall of Fame and in 1998, was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan presented Tony with the Private Sector Initiative Commendation in Recognition of Exemplary Community Service.
