Gina Maher is one of the most successful girls high school basketball coaches in New York State history. Maher has coached girls basketball at Irvington High School for the past 37 years. During her time as head coach, she has compiled 561 wins and 182 losses through 2012. A Marymount College graduate, Maher is one of only four girls high school basketball coaches in New York State to reach the 500-win plateau and her Irvington teams have captured 16 League titles (including 11 in a row at one point), 10 Sectional titles, four NYSPHSAA State titles and three New York State Federation titles. In 37 seasons, she has only experienced four seasons at or below .500 and had six seasons where her teams only endured one loss.
Maher may be well known for her success as a basketball coach, but has also made her mark as a successful tennis and track coach. Her tennis teams, which she’s coached for 28 years, won seven League titles and a NYSPHSAA state title in doubles, while her track teams won 11 League crowns over a 22-year period.
She has been inducted into the Westchester Hall of Fame (only the second Irvington resident to have the honor) as well as the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame (2010) and the Westchester County Senior Citizen’s Hall of Fame. In 2007, the Irvington School District named the high school gym in her honor.
A graduate of Sacred Heart of Mary High School in New York, Maher participated in basketball, track, swimming and volleyball then went on to Marymount to play four years of college basketball.
