John C. Johnson, a graduate of Canandaigua Academy (Section V) and St. Bonaventure University, returned to Canandaigua Academy to be the head coach of both the boys lacrosse and girls basketball teams as well as the defensive coordinator of the football team. As the lacrosse coach from 1979-2005, Johnson tallied a career record of 357-149 (.706) while winning 13 Finger Lakes Championships, six Section Championships and reaching the NYSPHSAA State Final Four on four occasions. He also coached ten All-Americans and four Academic All-Americans emerged from the program. Coach Johnson was selected to coach the Empire State Games lacrosse team in 1987 and 1994 as well as the United States High School Lacrosse All-Star Game in 1990 and 1995. From 1982 to 2005, he was named Finger Lakes Coach of the Year seven times. In 1993, Johnson took over the girls basketball program at Canandaigua finishing with a 218-49 record over 12 seasons. During that time, Johnson won nine Finger Lakes East Championships, two Section V titles and advanced to the NYSPHSAA State Final Four in 2000 and 2002. He was named the Finger Lakes Coach of the Year four times, Section V Coach of the Year four times, and was selected to coach in the Ronald McDonald All-Star game in 2002. As defensive coordinator of the football team, Coach Johnson helped lead Canandaigua to seven Section V Championships and two NYSPHSAA State Championships (1985, 1989). Coach Johnson has been inducted into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame (Greater Rochester Chapter) and the Canandaigua Academy Athletic Hall of Fame. Coach Johnson also served as the Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach at St. John Fisher College from 2006-2017.
