David R. Kelly, a graduate of Delaware Academy (Section IV) received a Bachelor’s degree from Illinois State and a Master’s degree from Indiana State at Terre Haute has been a staple in Section IV athletics for nearly 50 years, coaching the Delaware Academy football, track and field, and the JV boys basketball teams. As a football coach, Kelly recorded 272 career wins which included a 34 game win streak from 1984-87. Under Coach Kelly’s guidance, Delaware Academy held the highest winning percentage (.801) of any football team in Section IV during the 1980’s. He led his teams to ten league titles, nine Section IV titles, two regional titles and a NYSPHSAA Class C State Championship in 2001. As a boys and girls track and field coach, Kelly developed Delaware Academy’s program into a perennial competitor. During his 32 years as the coach he achieved 19 Section IV championships and 26 Susquenango league titles. He also served on the NY State Track Committee for 20 years (79-98). Coach Kelly was elected into the Section IV Hall of Fame in 2009. He continues to coach the JV boys basketball team of Delaware Academy and serve on the Section IV Football Committee which he has been a member of since its inception (30 years).
