NYSPHSAA Holds Quarterly Executive Committee Meeting in Saratoga

LATHAM, NY - The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) held its quarterly meeting of the Executive Committee on Wednesday, October 20th at the Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs. The committee voted on several key proposals important to the Association’s 787-member schools.

As a result of recent discussions related to name, image and likeness, the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee approved revising the NYSPHSAA Amateur Rule. The complete proposal can be found on pages 69-70 of the agenda. Student-athletes can “participate in commercial endorsements provided  there is no school team, school, section or NYSPHSAA affiliation”.

The committee approved freezing membership dues and NYSPHSAA Championship ticket prices for the 2022-23 school year and additionally approved boys and girls bowling teams to conduct virtual matches with section and league approval for the 2021-22 season.
The sport of tennis had several proposals approved including adopting a five-year rotation in girls tennis (individual) to fill the NYSPHSAA championship tournament with at-large selections to fill the byes/draws starting in 2021 and going through 2026. The girls team tennis regional rotation proposal was approved for 2021-26 and the boys team tennis regional rotation proposal was approved for 2022-2027. In addition, a joint proposal for boys and girls tennis was approved which states that all players must claim their profile in the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) system prior to the season. Schools are also required to submit their match results to UTR in a timely manner. This provides NYSPHSAA and member sections a comprehensive system to properly seed its tournaments.

Regional rotations were approved in the sports of boys volleyball for 2022-24 and girls volleyball for 2022-25. The committee approved a proposal that will allow schools to enter boys and girls swimming relay teams without submitting individual student-athlete names until the day of the state meet.

The meeting was called to order by President Julie Bergman at 9:00 am and concluded at 11:51 am. The next meeting of the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee will be Wednesday, February 2nd at The Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs.
