JMA Wireless Dome for the 24th Consecutive Year

By Sean Crowley, Intern Fall 2022

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is set to host the 2022 Football Championships on December 3rd & 4th at the JMA Wireless Dome (Section III) in Syracuse, New York. The JMA Wireless Dome, formerly known as the Carrier Dome, has been the sole host of this event for every year NYSPHSAA has conducted a football state tournament.

“This is a one of NYSPHSAA’s premier events,” said Gary Vanderzee, Football State Coordinator. “To be able to host a state tournament in a venue of this caliber is special for the kids and schools participating in it. The Dome staff is great and works concurrently with the great NYSPHSAA staff and working volunteers we have to make for a great event.  We are excited for a great weekend of football.”

The event will see all five classes of competition from Class AA to Class D with the first game kicking off on Saturday, December 3rd at noon.
The 2022 Class AA State Championship is Bennett (Section VI) taking on Newburgh Free Academy (Section IX). Both teams are looking to win their first football state championship in their school’s history. The winner of last year’s Class AA championship was Carmel from Section I.

The Class A State Championship is between Union-Endicott (Section IV) and Somers (Section I). Union-Endicott is looking to take home its first ever state championship in school history while Somers is trying to win its second after winning one in 2016. The 2021 winner was Christian Brothers Academy Syracuse (Section III).

The Class B State Championship is a rematch of 2021 with Maine-Endwell (Section IV) and Pleasantville (Section I) squaring off again. Maine-Endwell is looking to defend its title as state champions and take home a 7th state championship. Pleasantville is seeking its second state championship in five years.

The winner of the Class C State Championship will have a school taking home its first state championship. General Brown (Section III) will play James O’Neill (Section IX) and neither team has ever captured a state title. The 2021 Class C champion was Chenango Forks (Section IV).

Tioga (Section IV) is hoping to defend its title as Class D State Champions. They take on Cambridge/Salem (Section II) who is aiming to win its 4th state title. Tioga meanwhile has its eyes set on its 3rd title in just 7 years.

Tickets are being offered for advance sale through Ticketmaster or on-site at the JMA Wireless Dome ticket window. Prices are $12 per person for each day of competition. The event will be streamed on the NFHS Network, the official broadcasting partner of the NYSPHSAA State Championships.
