By Colette Stone, Spring 2023 Intern

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Individual Wrestling State Championships returns to the MVP Arena in Albany on February 24-25.

This is the 58th annual NYSPHSAA Wrestling State Championship. MVP Arena has hosted the tournament 15 times since 2005, marking its 16th time this year. It is one of the longest running NYSPHSAA State Championships in history.

In last year's tournament, Minisink Valley (Section IX) dominated the Division 1 tournament with three individual state champions,  including 2020 state champions PJ Duke (138lbs) and Zack Ryder (160lbs). Additionally, Ethan Gallo (215lbs) won a title in 2022. For Division 2, Tioga (Section IV), had two state champions, Gianni Silvestri (118lbs), who was a 2020 state champion, and Ousmane Duncanson (152lbs). Ryder, Gallo, Silvestri, and Duncanson will all be returning to the MVP Arena to defend their titles.

“Since NYSPHSAA went to two divisions, the State Individual tournament has been held at the MVP Arena which has been a great venue for this event,” said the NYSPHSAA Wrestling State Coordinator, Marty Sherman. “Their staff has been very easy to work with and the venue offers all the amenities we need. There will be three female wrestlers entered this year which is exciting since girls wrestling is starting to take off especially after the invitational tournament held in January.”

This is the 18th year of the two-division tournament format. Last year, NYSPHSAA expanded the tournament to allow an additional 120 wrestlers to compete, calculated based on performance, bringing the total participation to 500 athletes. The tournament will continue to recognize the 7th and 8th place wrestlers on the awards podium for each weight class. Qualifiers will represent NYSPHSAA’s 11 different sections, along with schools from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) of New York City and the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA).

“The competition should be exceptional and hopefully our fans will enjoy every aspect of this event. A special thank you to the staff at the NYSPHSAA for their continued support of our wrestling committee. We look forward to a great weekend of wrestling,” said Sherman.

Ticket packages can be purchased on www.mvparena.com (fees apply) or at the arena box office.
All matches will be streamed by the NFHS Network, the official broadcast partner of the NYSPHSAA State Championships.
