By Colette Stone, Spring 2023 Intern

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is set to host the 2023 Boys Swimming & Diving Championship on March 3-4.

The 61st annual Boys Swimming & Diving State Championships will return to Ithaca College which will be the through 2024. There will be 433 athletes competing at this weekend’s event.

“This is the culmination of a great season and career for many swimmers and divers,” said Peter Hugo, NYSPHSAA Swimming and Diving State Coordinator. “Ithaca is a great venue for this event with a world class pool and diving well in addition to a staff that provides all the services and amenities we need.”

At last year’s championship, representatives from two NYSPHSAA schools clinched multiple state titles. Burnt Hills/Scotia (Section II) took home the gold in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, and the 100 Yard Backstroke, achieved by Sam Brown. Horace Greeley (Section I) won the events for the 200 Yard Free Relay and 400 Yard Free Relay.
Horace Greeley relay teams will be returning to the state competition once again. They will have returning relay members, Connor McHugh for both the 200 Yard and 400 Yard Freestyle Relays, and Hudson Chung for the 400. Aaron Gasiewicz from Lancaster (Section VI) is returning with hopes of becoming a back-to-back state champion in the 200 Yard IM.  Another returning state champ, Brayden Henkel from Albany Academy (Section II) will attempt to repeat in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.

The Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium on the Ithaca campus is a 13,100 square foot Olympic size pool that consists of 9 lanes, 50 meters by 21 lanes 25 yards in length. The pool also has two 1-meter boards and two 3-meter boards on separate platforms, suitable for numerous diving events. The location also provides seating for 1,000 spectators.

Tickets are ONLY available online at https://gofan.co/app/school/NYSPHSAA for any of the three sessions. The event kicks off with swimming preliminaries Friday at 10 am, then diving at 2 pm, followed by swimming finals on Saturday at 10 am. Tickets are $11.50 (including fees) per session.
