Starting Friday, June 2nd, 32 of the best singles players and 64 of the best doubles players in the state will come together and compete for a State Championship at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. This three-day tournament, traditionally Thursday through Saturday, will begin on Friday June 2nd and conclude on Sunday, June 4th due to the NYS History Regents taking place on Thursday, June 1st.

“I am looking forward to serving as the new boys tennis state coordinator and enhancing this event for the top tennis players in the state,” said Quan Huynh, NYSPHSAA Boys Tennis State Coordinator.  “This school year the best high school tennis players in the state will represent their high schools to compete for the NYSPHSAA singles or doubles championship. The competition will be intense and a treat for at the Billie Jean KING USTA Tennis Center.”

Drew Fishback of Geneva High School (Section V) qualified for his second NYSPHSAA’s Boys Singles Tennis Championship. Fishback’s brother, Ryan won the Boys Tennis Singles Championship in 2019. Last year, Fishback lost to Stephan Gershfeld of George W. Hewlett High School (VIII) in the semifinals. Gershfeld advanced and was eventually crowned the 2022 NYSPHSAA Singles Champion. Gershfeld will return this season to defend his singles championship title in hopes of claiming the top spot once again.

Some familiar faces return to the 2023 NYSPHSAA Doubles Championship this year. Jason Wei and Matthew Wallis, seniors from Horace Greeley High School (Section 1) are looking to make another deep run in the NYSPHSAA’s Boys Doubles Championship again this year after losing in the semifinals to the eventual 2023 Boys Tennis Doubles State Champions, Michael Griff, and Alex Marino. Pittsford Sutherland High School’s (Section V) juniors, Dylan Bhatia and Charlie Thyoff and Peru Central High School’s (Section VII) seniors, Gavin Mero and Elijah Lederman also return to the field this year looking for another shot at claiming the top spot.

The first round of matches will begin at 8am on Friday, June 2nd followed by the second round at 2pm. Quarterfinals, semifinals and consolation matches will be held on Saturday, June 3rd starting at 8:30am. The 2022 NYSPHSAA Boys Singles Champion will be crowned at 8:30am on Sunday when finals take place in singles and doubles as well as the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th place matches.
