In 2023 and 2024, NYSPHSAA sponsored a statewide girls wrestling invitational at SRC Arena in Syracuse with over 200 girls each year. With the rapid growth of the sport, the Association was approved to establish a state tournament to encompass all 11 sections of the state.

“We are truly looking forward to three incredible events this winter including hosting the first ever Girls Wrestling State Championship,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “The Dual Meet Championship has been anchored at SRC Arena for seven years now and has been a great venue for our schools to compete for a team championship. In Albany, we’re excited that now we’ll get to showcase the Girls Individual State Championship the same week of the Boys Championship at one of the best venues in the state. If you’re a wresting fan, there is a lot to look forward to this winter.”

The 2025 Boys Wrestling Individual State Championships are now in their 20th year of a two-division format and will follow a similar schedule to last year’s event held at MVP Arena. In 2022, NYSPHSAA expanded to allow an additional 120 wrestlers to fill the byes in the brackets using a formula based on a wrestler’s current season and previous season’s performances. The at-large slots starting in 2022 bring the total number of participants to nearly 500 despite the elimination of two weight classes in 2020.  Also in 2020, NYSPHSAA began to recognize the 7th and 8th place wrestlers on the awards podium for each weight class.  Qualifiers will hail from the 11 NYSPHSAA sections, as well as from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) of New York City, the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), and New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). The MVP Arena has hosted this event 18 of the last 21 years.
